A fresh scratch on your car is one of those things you notice every time you walk up to it — and instantly wonder what it's going to cost to fix. The honest answer depends on how deep the scratch actually is, but the good news is that most scratches don't need a full panel respray to look invisible again.
Here's what car scratch repair actually costs in the UK in 2026 — from a light polish-out through to a proper blended respray.
Car scratch repair cost UK — quick summary
- Clear-coat only (light surface scratch): roughly £60–£120
- Through-paint scratch, single panel SMART repair: roughly £150–£280
- Deep scratch through to primer or metal, blended respray: roughly £220–£380 per panel
- Multiple panels or full-length key scratch: roughly £400–£800+
- Main-dealer body shop equivalent: often 2–3× the mobile SMART price
Prices assume standard solid or metallic paint. Pearl, tri-coat and heavily faded colours can add a bit for the extra blend work.
How deep is your scratch? (The fingernail test)
Before you get a quote, it helps to know what "kind" of scratch you're dealing with. Run your fingernail gently across it:
- Nail glides straight over it — you're in the clear coat only. Usually polishable.
- Nail catches slightly, no colour change in the scratch — deeper into the clear coat, may need a light SMART touch-in.
- You can see a different colour (usually white primer or grey metal) inside the scratch — you've broken through the paint. This one needs proper prep, colour and lacquer.
Light surface scratches (£60–£120)
Scratches that live entirely in the clear coat can often be machine-polished out — no paint, no filler, no respray. It's the cheapest repair we do and the whole visit is usually under an hour. If a repairer quotes you £300 to "spray out" a scratch that's actually just in the lacquer, get a second opinion.
SMART scratch repair (£150–£280 per panel)
Once the scratch has broken through the colour coat, you need paint — but you almost never need the whole panel repainted. A SMART repair (Small to Medium Area Repair Technique) fills, primes, colours and lacquers only the damaged area, then blends the edge into the surrounding paint so the repair is undetectable.
This is the sweet spot for most single scratches — up to roughly the size of a credit card — and it's typically done on your driveway in 2–3 hours.
Deep scratch or full-length key damage (£220–£800+)
Deep scratches that run across a whole door or wing, or key scratches that travel down multiple panels, need proper prep and a blended respray of each affected panel. That means:
- Wet sanding the damaged area back to a sound surface
- Filling any gouges and re-priming
- Colour-matching to the actual on-car shade (not just the paint code)
- Blending the base coat into the surrounding panel
- Two-pack lacquering the repair and blend zone
- Flatting and polishing to a factory finish
Even on a "big" scratch, a mobile scratch and dent repair is significantly cheaper than a body-shop full panel respray, because you're only paying for the actual repair — not premises, storage and a courtesy car.
Why body-shop scratch repair costs so much more
A traditional bodyshop quote for a single scratch will often start at £400–£600, even if the damage is 8cm long. That's because they price for a full panel: strip, prime, base, lacquer, oven cure, refit — plus overheads, plus your loan car. It's thorough, but it's massive overkill for a scuff.
A mobile SMART operator prices for the actual damage — which is why the same repair often comes in at a third of the cost.
Should you claim on insurance for a scratch?
Usually not. Comprehensive policies will cover paint damage, but the excess is often £250–£500 — which is more than the repair — and claiming affects your no-claims discount. For anything under about £500, most drivers pay directly and keep the claims history clean.
The exception is malicious damage (keying, vandalism), where you should report it to the police first and consider claiming under your policy's malicious damage cover.
How to get an accurate scratch repair quote
Send us two or three photos:
- A close-up in daylight showing how deep it is
- A wider shot showing the whole panel
- A note of the make, model, year and paint code (inside the driver's door jamb)
We'll give you an honest, no-obligation figure. If it's polishable we'll tell you — we won't quote you for a respray you don't need.
